Kettering Health Diverts Stroke Patients Due to Network Outage
Kettering Health, a major hospital network in Ohio, experienced a significant internet outage yesterday. Officials from the organization believe the disruption stemmed from an internal IT issue. The outage, which lasted several hours, had critical operational impacts, forcing seven of Kettering’s emergency departments - including those in Hamilton, Middletown, and Franklin - to divert stroke patients to other facilities while the issue was being resolved. This incident follows a cyberattack in May that had already strained the hospital system. Kettering Health stated it would provide updates as more information becomes available.
This situation underscores the vital need for comprehensive, end-to-end visibility across the entire network and IT infrastructure with a system like NIKSUN. By collecting, analyzing, and correlating data from multiple sources - including network packets, flow data, system logs, metrics, telemetry, and SNMP - organizations can proactively detect, isolate, and respond to issues before they disrupt critical operations. In healthcare especially, where downtime can directly affect patient outcomes, robust observability enables faster root cause analysis, minimizes service disruptions, and strengthens resilience against both technical failures and cyberattacks.
