Connex Credit Union Suffers Data Breach, Exposing Member Information

Connex, one of Connecticut’s largest credit unions, suffered a data breach in which unknown attackers accessed and stole personal and financial information from tens of thousands of its members. The non-profit institution, which has served the greater New Haven area since 1940 and manages over $1 billion in assets, confirmed that data including names, account numbers, debit card details, Social Security numbers, and government-issued IDs may have been compromised between June 2 and 3.

Although no unauthorized access to members’ funds or accounts has been detected, Connex is warning customers of ongoing phishing scams in which fraudsters impersonate its employees. The credit union has issued alerts on its website, advising members not to share sensitive information over the phone or via text and to report suspicious communications immediately.

This breach comes amid a broader surge in cyberattacks, including incidents linked to the ShinyHunters group targeting Salesforce environments and high-profile companies, and attacks by the Scattered Spider group now focusing on aviation and retail sectors.

In light of this evolving threat landscape, organizations - particularly those handling sensitive financial or personal data - should invest in proactive cybersecurity monitoring. This includes implementing tools like NIKSUN's that provide rich visibility across networks, applications, endpoints, and cloud environments. Enhanced situational awareness can help detect and respond to intrusions faster, minimizing the risk of data loss, reputational damage, and customer impact.
