VA Attorney General’s Office Cyber-attacked

There has been a complex cyber-attack at the Virginia attorney general’s office on Wednesday. On seeing suspicious activity these officials were forced to shut down computer systems and return to paper court filings. The Virginia State Police, the FBI and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency, were immediately notified and these enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Steven Popps emailed employees with a notice that most of the office’s IT systems — including email, VPN and internet access, and website — were offline. The Bureau of Justice Statistics is the primary statistical agency within the Department of Justice, State attorneys general that collects data on crime, consumer debt and other areas.
