Ransomware Attack at Collection Agency Leads to Leakage of 237,000 Comcast Customer SSNs

According to a recent filing with the State of Maine, a data breach at a third party has affected over 237,000 customers of the cable and broadband giant Comcast. The breach has exposed the names, addresses, social security numbers, and birthdates of the affected customers.

The breach stems from a ransomware attack at Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS), a debt collection agency previously engaged by Comcast. In the filing, the collection agency revealed that it had suffered a breach in February, exposing the sensitive information of more than 4.2 million people. Later in July, FBCS informed Comcast about how they had been affected by the breach, saying an “unauthorized party downloaded data from FBCS systems and encrypted some systems as part of a ransomware attack.”

For Comcast, this data breach comes embarrassingly close on the heels of their last cybersecurity incident in December 2023 which impacted more than 35 million people. Read more about this story on our LinkedIn page
