Cyberattacks – The Next Frontier in the Iran-Israel Conflict

Israel has vowed to respond to Iran's drone and missile attack on Saturday, and experts are predicting that cyberattacks will be the next frontier in this escalation.

Cyberattacks tied to the Israel-Hamas conflict have already gained international attention. Politically motivated hackers have taken down emergency service applications, news sites and more throughout the conflict.

Israel and Iran have the ability to launch destructive malware wipers, ransomware, and other types of cyberattacks against each other. Iranian government hackers deployed malware wipers against Albania in 2022. And the U.S. and Israel infected Iranian critical infrastructure with malware to disrupt a nuclear facility back in 2010. Iran has also been behind several cyberattacks targeting Israeli organizations during the ongoing Hamas conflict.

Israel is still weighing its options for retaliation and as a cyber offensive can give countries the ability to retaliate without risking mass casualties, experts are forecasting that cyber warfare will be the next battle zone as this conflict escalates.
